On the occasion of the closing of Jan’s residency at Het Wilde Weten Robert Fruinstraat 35, Rotterdam
At Het Wilde Weten, Jan was drawn to the history of the building, an old Franciscan monastery. The founder of this 13th-century order, Francis of Assisi, took a vow of poverty but went further by also rejecting communal ownership. Where did this motivation come from, how did it translate into practice, and how does it work today? In Rotterdam, Jan scavenged the streets of Rotterdam for abandoned clothes, leaving public traces of the found textiles. He later documented the items through drawing, dressed a choir, and organized Jan’s Giftige Straatspelen (Toxic Games) to pass the orphaned garments to new owners.
