Scavenging

Jan’s artistic practice has typically sought to develop theoretical reflections on the gift through a threefold process of collection, documentation, and performance. Taking as base material those textiles that would otherwise be discarded and/or ‘donated’ by the West to other parts of the world, his artistic projects often begin with a ‘scavenging’ phase whereby he collects clothes that have been left by people either on the street or alongside the charity donation bins that are ubiquitous in all major European cities. Jan usually scavenge for these clothes over a period of weeks or months as a way of connecting my work to its surrounding environment and communities.
